Do you charge a call-out fee?
No. A call-out fee is a separate charge on top of the hourly rate just for turning up, and we do not have one — nor is there anything to pay before we arrive, which is not true of every firm. Work is charged by the hour with a minimum of one hour, and we tell you the rate when you ring rather than after.
How quickly can you get to me?
Anywhere in East London we are usually with you inside the hour. Further out into Essex or across the Dartford Crossing into north Kent it depends on traffic and where our engineers are — ring and we will give you an honest answer rather than a guess.
How can I tell if my property needs rewiring?
The usual signs are rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed cable, a fuse board with rewireable fuses rather than breakers, sockets with no earth, persistent tripping, or scorch marks around outlets. Properties last rewired before the early 1980s are very often due. An EICR will tell you for certain whether it needs a full rewire, a partial one, or just remedial work.
What is an EICR and who needs one?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report is a full inspection and test of the fixed wiring. Every fault is coded C1 (danger present), C2 (potentially dangerous), C3 (improvement recommended) or FI (further investigation). Private landlords in England must have a satisfactory EICR at least every five years. Homeowners are not legally required to have one, but they are worth doing every ten years and before you buy.
What is PAT testing and who needs it?
Portable appliance testing checks plug-in equipment rather than fixed wiring. There is no law that names it directly, but employers and landlords have a duty to keep electrical equipment safe, and PAT testing is the normal way to evidence that. It is most commonly needed by offices, shops, rentals and HMOs, and we supply a labelled register you can hand to an insurer.
What qualifications should an electrician have?
Ask whether they are registered with a competent person scheme such as NICEIC, and whether they can self-certify notifiable work under Part P — otherwise you have to notify building control yourself and pay for it. We are an NICEIC Approved Contractor and NICEIC Domestic Installer, Part P registered, City & Guilds and EAL qualified, and fully insured.
